About this item

  • TWO SURFACES, ONE PAD — open loofah fibre on one face for elbows, knees and heels; brushed cotton terry on the other for everywhere that does not want scrubbing.
  • REPLACES A SCRUB AND A FLANNEL — which is one thing to buy, one thing to dry and one thing to eventually compost, instead of two.
  • FLIP MID-SHOWER — no putting one down wet to pick another up.
  • STITCHED BACK TO BACK — cotton thread all the way round, so the two faces do not separate in use.
  • BOTH HALVES COMPOST — gourd fibre and brushed cotton. Nothing to separate before it goes in the bin.

One gourd, dried in the sun, cut by hand

A loofah is not a sponge and it is not a manufactured product. It is a gourd — Luffa aegyptiaca — left on the vine until it dries out, then peeled, deseeded and cut.

That is the entire process. No foaming, no moulding, no petroleum. The thing in your hand grew on a plant a few months ago and will be soil again a few months after you are done with it.

Why people switch from a plastic sponge

  • It dries out properly between showers, so it does not go sour
  • It lathers a bar of soap with a fraction of what a synthetic sponge swallows
  • It sheds no microplastic down the drain, because there is no plastic in it
  • It composts whole at the end instead of outliving you in landfill
  • It costs less than the sponge it replaces
How long does a natural loofah last?

Four to six weeks for face use and two to three months for body use, if you rinse it after each use and hang it somewhere it can dry fully. The thing that shortens a loofah's life is staying wet — left in a puddle in the corner of the bath it will go soft and start to smell within a fortnight. Hung up with air around it, it will outlast several plastic sponges.

Is a loofah better than a plastic bath sponge?

For most people, yes, on three counts: it dries out between uses so it does not sour, it makes a bar of soap go much further, and it composts instead of shedding microplastic into the water and then sitting in landfill. The one thing a synthetic sponge does better is stay soft when dry — a loofah is stiff until it meets warm water.
