About this item

  • MILD ENOUGH FOR A FACE — which is what most people buy it for, and the reason it is the softest bar in the range.
  • RINSES AWAY COMPLETELY — no film left behind on skin or on the basin.
  • CLEAR, NOT DYED CLEAR — made transparent by glycerine and a slower pour, which is a harder bar to make than an opaque one.
  • KEEP IT OUT OF STANDING WATER — a softer bar than the cold-processed ones. On a draining dish it lasts; in a puddle it does not.
  • THREE OILS AND GLYCERINE — vegetable glycerine, coconut oil, castor oil, sodium hydroxide.

Six weeks on a rack is what makes a bar last

Every bar here is cold-processed: the oils and the lye are combined without forcing heat through them, so the glycerine the reaction produces stays in the soap rather than being drawn off and sold.

Then it sits. Six weeks on a curing rack, losing water and hardening. A bar sold at two weeks looks identical and dissolves in a fortnight; the same bar at six weeks lasts two or three times as long. It is the least visible thing about a soap and the one you notice most.

What is not in these bars

  • No SLS or SLES — the lather comes from coconut oil, not a detergent
  • No parabens and no synthetic preservative; a cured bar does not need one
  • No palm oil
  • No plastic wrap — paper, and nothing else
  • No colour added for the sake of the photograph
How do I make a handmade soap bar last longer?

Keep it out of standing water. A bar left in a flat dish that holds an inch of water will soften and go through three times faster than the same bar on a draining dish or a wooden rack. Use it with a loofah rather than straight on the skin and it goes further again — the fibre works up a lather from very little.

Is handmade cold-processed soap better for skin?

It keeps its glycerine, which most mass-produced bars have had removed and sold separately, and it has no synthetic detergent in it — the lather comes from saponified coconut oil rather than from SLS. Whether that suits you depends on your skin; the transparent glycerine bar is the mildest of ours and the one most people with sensitive skin settle on.

About this product

Made clear rather than opaque, which takes glycerine and a slower pour. The result is a softer bar than the cold-processed ones — keep it out of standing water and it will last.

Mild enough for a face, which is what most people buy it for.
